Just been offered the motor in question and wondering if any one can tell me the year it was born and any history on the make, be it good or bad.

"Rob, that is a 1992 Mercury built Mariner (built in Belgium).

Comes from the line of 6/8/9.9 horse motors (pre-1995), which after a minor change continued until about 2005.

Probably the very best line of portable outboards ever built by anyone.

That particular model would normally sell in the 750-1000 dollar range (up my way) if running and in decent cosmetic shape.

If it's even been (slightly) maintained, it could well last you for 20 or more years.

If it suits your needs, buy it before someone else does..."

I bought the motor and boat last night but haven't run it as yet. It was on the back of a 3.4metre Stessl Jaybee in great condition which i have just put my Super 14hp Evinrude on.
The Mariner6 looks as though it ain't done much work and this was confirmed by the mate i bought it off.
