"what vintage might this little motor be?

model-J6PCRM serial - E5874847

also while trying to get it to run again i find a gray wire taped up after opening the cowl. the wire is bundled with all the others and the throttle cable. its taped up nicely but i did not do it so im wondering what this might have been used for.

thanks in advance, john"

"J= Johnson
6= 6hp
P= Reckon

"J= Johnson
6= 6hp
P= Reckon you have misread that should be R for rope start
C= 8 and R= 4 so its an '84 model
M is a production number

See http://www.skoterskroten.com/img/arsmodellstabell.pdf]HERE[/url]

Not sure about the grey wire. Suspect from what you say its one of the two wires that goes to the stop button on the end of the tiller. The other end goes to one of the plugs that connect up to the power pack. The other one, which is grounded, is black IIRC.

BTW I have the Evinrude longshaft sail version (Yachtwin) E6SLCRM. When you start having cooling problems thats are not cured by a new pump impeller suspect the grommet at the top of the water tube. Unfortunately it is lower unit off and power head off to get at it! That is the only problem I have had and I have had it from new."

"hello again, much thanks vics

"hello again, much thanks vics. this helps a lot. i like this old rig as it was my familys boat purchased new. the elder 6hp was my uncles (he was a waterman) so im all nostalgic about the boat and the motor. im trying to polish the old feathercraft aluminum. even in its present condition it does draw a lot of interest for a metal boat.

upon my uncles passing all he had was 3 O/B motors including this little 6hp. the sea is indeed a tough life.

im about one click on the scale from being legally blind now so yes i probably misread the id number. ill recheck it.

oh and about the impeller. now thats a nightmare sorta. when i got this old boat and motor it had sat for years as all of the remaining family were ill and passing away.

im in a rural area here and limited to repair shop options within 75 miles so i picked as best as i could and took the motor in to them for check up and specically told them to replace w/p impeller. when i picked it up the moron tells me
he checked the impeller and "it was fine so i put it back in" argh! the pain! i expressed displeasure with his choice to do such and was not so politely told to leave and dont come back.

no worries i wont ever be back. but thats how it is here with the majority of repair places be them auto lawn and garden or even marine.

today ill try to get the johnson to run once again but this time on my own. i had heart issues
2 years ago and the rig sat once again

so this gray wire goes for the kill switch (tiller button) ill try to find its former location and reinstall if i can. tight quarters for big paws :D

and ill be ordering a owner/repair manual asap also.

is starting fluid a NO-NO to use sparingly? the motor tried one time to start but 30 more rope pulls yielded nothing except blisters :D

some day i want a vintage johnson motor so me and my woman can ever travel to the gatherings the feathercraft folks have sometimes. my elderly brother had a 20hp merc on this boat for years
so im not sure what size O/B ill try to get, just something from 49-55 i reckon but for sure a johnson as thats what motor came with most FC's i think.

highest regards and thanks, john hall

Use it very sparingly because it has no oil in it. Some say squirt some fuel mix into the carb throat but that's not going to be as effective as the starting fluid. They are based on ether, at least the ones I know are, which ignites very easily so even a weak spark will fire it. WD40 is sometimes suggested. That does contain a little oil but its mostly based on white spirit, Stoddard solvent or mineral spirit or whatever you call it in your neck of the woods. That probably does not ignite any easier than gasoline, maybe not as well. It used to use LPG (butane probably) as propellant but now uses carbon dioxide so I guess as starting fluid it's not now much good even if it once was."

"success without any starting

"success without any starting fluid. thanks to you and forum search i found the fuel and motor side fittings stuck so it was not getting any fuel. :D

it started then smoked heavily but cleared right up and idled contently with what i think is normal 2 cycle smoke emit

now thanks to vics i know its a 1984 6hp where does it discharge colling water from water pump ie:pee

im still so much concerned about the impeller issue i mentioned earlier, with the repair guy reinstalling my old impeller.please tell me where the water exits so i can check if it is actually pumping

btw happy fathers day to all you guys! its been a good one here with the outboard comming to life again.

thanks"

"The pee hole is in the rear,

"The pee hole is in the rear, starboard side corner of the lower cover facing straight down. It should have a hose on it that goes across to the other side of the engine (through a P clip on the bottom of the cylinder head IIRC) and up to a fitting (elbow) near the top of the exhaust manifold cover.

You might find the exploded diagrams on the BRP Parts Catalog website useful here: parts diagrams

Figured out how to do the links now
