"Unbolt lower unit from leg (3 bolts IIRC) but if long shaft remove extension with gearcase and remove later.

Pull gearcase (and extension if applicable ) from leg. Shift rod pulls out of pinion at the top, water tube pulls out from water pump and drive shaft has to be persuaded to pull out of crankshaft.

While the gearcase is off make sure you can get a good flow of water up the watertube and through the engine. The grommet at the top of the water tube gets squeezed by corrosion over the top of the tube and restricts or even cuts off the water flow. Power head off to fix I am afraid.

This is also the time to renew gearcase seals if there is any sign of water ingress.
