6hp Johnson 1968 Tilt Reverse Lock Rod - How's it Work?

My neighbor has a 1968 6hp Johnson that he got for free and I fixed for him. It did not have the original reverse lock rod #303949, the rod that keeps the engine locked when you go in reverse, so the engine does not come out of the water. The rod more importantly keeps the engine in the right tilt angle for running. The engine had a big nail for the rod, and it easily pops out as there are no holes in the engine to hold it. So, I looked online and found that the original pin looks just like the nail, I do not see how the part could stay in place, it just sits in the two slots on the engine. Any bump or even the water pressure can pop it out.

Here's picture of a 6hp from the two sides, notice there's no hole for the rod on one side and the other side has slots, not holes. There is nothing to hold the rod in place.

It looks like I had the wrong part altogether, as I got my information from the diagram. I looks like the correct part is #39 on the diagram, will that do it?

That's the main part to replace the nail. :) Now that the diagram is handy, be sure that you have everything else you need. A real PITA to keep going back for this and that.
