i have a 1975 6504R 6hp evinrude with a damaged prop shaft. i have a spare 1966 6602 with a good prop shaft. i plan on replacing the damaged one with this. all the part numbers for prop shaft, gearcase head appear the same but the 1975 oil retainer seal has an I.D. of 0.554, O.D. 1.062 and height 0.312.
the 1966 has I.D. 0.554, O.D. 1.0 and height 0.375.
why are things different when all the part numbers seem the same? should i get the 1975 seal kit or the 1966 seal kit?
thanks for any help.

I believe folks have already coached to say that the newer model had a different seal from the factory !!------So if you are using the 66 bearing housing use the older seal kit.-----But wait parts interchange on 6 HP models is legendary so I do not know what lower unit is on your motors !----All bets are off.-----But can you read the number on the seal ??

the 1975 motor is all original (it only has maybe has only 10-15 hours total time on it). I was puzzled because all the parts seem the same but different seals are called for. maybe I could use the 1966 prop shaft and gearhouse head?

It is well known that the gearcase head and seal assy part number was changed at some point. The new number replaces the old one, which explains why the part number is the same. That applies if replacing the whole gearcase head and seal assy in an older model. But if replacing only the seal, they take seal part number 313282 for an original 1975 gearcase head or 303345 for an original 1966 gearcase head.

In other words, if replacing the seals in an unmolested 1975 motor, use a 1975 seal kit.

thanks for the help. I appreciate it. being a newbie its great to have this forum for the more experienced to generously share their advice.
