"i fired up my boat today &#40

"i fired up my boat today (well tried) i just bought it off a friend, and it wont run, engine turns over great but after some investigating there is no spark,

i think the culperate is the CD box, there were 2 very brittle wires comming out of the box (they hooked up to 2 more wires then went to the top of the motor) i ended up soldering 2 new wires on them, however this hasnt fixed the problem.
the engine is a 1969 johnson hydro electric V115 motor

is my CD box shot? or could it be something else?

im quite green about this stuff, im commin over from the car world"

(J. Reeves)

Purchase a small 12v bulb at your local automotive parts store (the 12v bulb is to look like a flashlight bulb, not a headlight bulb). Solder two wires to that bulb, one to the side of the bulb (ground), and the other to the positive point. You might use a bulb of a somewhat lower voltage to obtain a brighter glow... just a suggestion.

Remove the spark plugs. With the key in the on position, make sure that you have 12v going to the pack at the terminal block (purple wire). Now, connect the ground wire from the bulb to any powerhead ground. Connect the wire from the positive point of that bulb to the powerpack wire that is connected to the coil wire on the terminal board (blue wire).

Crank the engine and observe that bulb closely (CLOSELY!). If that bulb glows even the slightest bit, the powerpack is okay. It may be a very dim glow... just so it glows! If it doesn't glow, the pack has failed.

Keep in mind, that type powerpack (Battery Capacitance Discharge) demands a top notch battery of at least 70 amp hours. Any less will, in time, cause powerpack failure."

"thanks for the help, do you h

"thanks for the help, do you have any other suggestions or tests if the power pack turns out to be ok? what could have caused this problem? i dont want to spend a chunk of change on the pack then have it blow again cause of something else...
what type of battery do you suggest?"

"One test at a time as it'

"One test at a time as it's usually the pulsepack that's at fault, especially with the wiring being in the condition you state.

Battery should be a non maintance free type battery (one you can add water to if needed), and as I stated above, at least a 70amp hour battery."

"ok i did that test, power in,

"ok i did that test, power in, no power out

i dont suppose you would know where a used one is do you?"

"Jay, you don't want to go

"Jay, you don't want to go with a used pack. Napa sells them and they are also available through Mallory. They are big dollars either way."

"Jay, there is another alterna

"Jay, there is another alternative to the factory CDI box. One of the big problems w/ the factory box is that if anything goes wrong with the charging system on these motors, IE, the rectifier going bad, then the CDI box is damaged. You can use a MSD 6A ignition box and 2 high vibration coils. You hook the MSD box up just like the factory box and mount both coils on the motor. 1 coil hooks to the distributor cap and the other is grounded to the block. You have to use the second grounded coil to cut the voltage in half. If you don't, it burns up the distributor cap. The great thing about the MSD box versus the factory one is that it is much more stable. It will fire with as little as 5 volts or as much as 18 volts. The motors idle and start better too. And the box is $100 less than the factory while being available at most auto part stores."

"very nice! i have an MSD box

"very nice! i have an MSD box laying around (pays to be a hot rod guy!)
you said something about a distributor cap... i dont think i have one... or is it hidden in my motor? under the stator, sorry but im really new to marine engines..."

"theres 1 problem to this MSD

"theres 1 problem to this MSD thing, i dont think i have a distribtor.. heres a pic... there are 4 coils under the stator...

anyone know how i can make this work?

"ok ive got all of the info i

"ok ive got all of the info i think i need,

the stock box is putting out 300volts, and the coils putting out 25KV,

the MSD box is putting out 460volts and the coils max of 40KV

does that seem to much or wil this work?"

and can anyone tell me what ea

and can anyone tell me what each wire is comming out of the box so if this works i can hook it up directly?

"ok i just ordered a MSG blast

"ok i just ordered a MSG blaster igniton, it was the lowest voltage i could find, its got 420 volts output and 35KV secondary,

if it dosent work i guess ill just put it in my truck!"

"Jay if want to email me you m

"Jay if want to email me you mail address, my brother and I will put together a wiring diagram for how to hook up the MSD ignition and mail it to you. You said you bought a MSD ignition, what model did you buy? and don't forget you have to have 2 epoxy filled coils. I would strongly recommend buying a factory manual for that motor also. This site sells them or you can find them on Ebay. The Chiltons and Clymers are ok but the factory manual has trouble shooting sections as well as wiring diagrams. My email is [email protected]."
