68 Johnson ignition problems

ihave a 68 Johnson 65hp, model #VXL-14B. No spark .Have replaced coil, rotor, cap. Is the next step to replace the amplifier assembly? Also want to know what the stator does.

The stator is there to keep the battery charged as it is a battery powered ignition system. It's not used in the ignition system.
