68 johnson 9.5hp

I have a Johnson 9.5hp,rebuilt carb and replace points and condenser,a complete tune up,will not run very good once you put the cowl on,leave it off it runs like a raped ape ,look for exhaust leak and don't find one,it runs so good without the hood the carb sweats,any ideas ,please help

Is this motor running in a barrel ?-------------If so then use a fan to give it some clean air.

I figured it out finally,the exhaust housing seal was warp and not sealed all the way around so I made a circular brace out of 1/2 flat stock and have a 1/4 bolt on each side to hold It in place,problem solved,thank you for your response

I should have when I had it apart,the rubber ring on the exhaust housing that is held on by a clamp,over time they deform and not seal against the outer housing and exhaust leaks pass it into the cowl then it runs like crap,take a water hose and pour water inside the cowl below the motor and if water runs out the bottom it is leaking,once you take it apart you will see it and get the idea how to fix it,they still make it if you want to buy a new one but I didn't want to wait so I made this inside strap to expand it and bolt it and it fixed it,i hope this helps you,take care
