1968 Evinrude 9.9 long shaft.Removed lower end to replace water pump, had great trouble connecting shift linkage because of the awesome room available (NOT).Anyway,I managed to unscrew the shift rod from the shift lever yoke assembly and can not get it back in.Gears are not in nuetral by the way.
Is there a way to do this with out tearing things apart further?

There was no 9.9 in 1968.---------Is it a 9.5 perhaps.--------Post a model # so we can compare apples to apples !!!!----The room available is ample for the job at hand as the design stayed the same for about 30 years !

1981 is the year. Pull the lower unit and then put the coupler on the lower shift shaft be sure and center the groove in the shaft with the hole on the coupler then install it and you can then center the groove on the upper shaft with the hole in the coupler then install the bolt. Make sure both coupler bolts are good and tight!

Ok..Thank you,but I am talking about the bottom end of the shift shaft where it screws in to part number 13 in the schematic.I look down the shift shaft hole and the number 13 part is not visable. It has moved or rotated and not in alignment to screw the shaft into.

Doubt that it would move out of the way.------Have installed many of those lower shift rods with no problems.--------Will be 1 hr or so away from you next week should you want to receive some help.--------Sailed approximately 40,000 miles on Lake Huron and Georgian bay.

Im my op,I described I was having trouble at the coupler end,so dumb me had the newby idea that I may be able to gain a quarter inch by backing out the shift rod and out it came.I did nor remove the philips screw #14.

I can look down the shift rod tube to the gears and can not see the threaded part, that's why I think somthing shifted. Also, its not in nuetral any more.I would love your help, but am in the states near Hershey,Pa.My wife was from west montrose and we will be coming to Listowel for thanksgiving.Any ideas?

PTL!!!!Just went out to the bench, shined the light down in the shift rod hole and there it was lined up for me.Grabbed the shift rod and in it went and gave it a few turns.I am soo relieved.New question now is the measurement from the top of the lower unit to the top hole in the coupler?

Have been to Hershey years ago looking for old car parts.---------Listowel is just over an 1 hr away from me.------No measurement required.-----You screw it in all the way and back it out so that the bend points forward.

Thanks racerone...Ready to give it a try in the morning.

Got her all back togeather racerone.Does 8 oz's of gear oil sound about right for this model 9.9?Also,is there a substitute for the gasket sealing compound to put on the prop shaft when I reinstall the prop?

New question in this thread.Bench tested (in water) and it seams the new water pump is not working. If I remember correctly, water spews out the tiny exhaust port.??If I hold my finger over the exhaust hole,I get air bubbles. Is this normal.Could the pump be working, but somthing is clogged in the top end?

Water should pour out with the exhaust seconds after the motor starts.------So something is wrong with waterpump installation.
