68 9.5 Sportwin help and advice

Well I put my 1968 Sportwin 9.5 on ebay for $275 and it never sold. I had never run the motor and the guy I got it off of said it hasn't run in seven years.

I figured rather then paying for an up grade I would take a run at this one. I bought a tank and connections, through a mix in, pumped up the bulb, placed it into a bucket, and pulled the choke. My dad and I were amazed in one and a half pulls it fired off and ran like a champ!!!!!!! I really lucked out.

I did not run it long as I couldn't find water pumping out. I did notice there was about a one inch hole in the back that seemed to puff air and eventually spit very very very small amounts of water. My questions is there a thermostat here that just wasn't open or am I looking at the wrong spot.

Any advice on what I should "fix" or "replace" as this engine has been sitting so long?

Seeing how fast it start I am glad it didn't sell.

Water should gush out that hole you speak of with quite a force.

Assuming you had the lower unit in the water with the waterlevel a few inches over the portion where the lower unit bolts up (water pump submerged), your explanation indicates that the water pump assembly requires replacing.

Thousands of parts in my remaining stock. Not able to list them all. Let me know what you need and I'll look it up for you. Visit my eBay store at:

O I had the water only up over what looked like the water intake. Are you talking about the part where the narrow point bolts up to the fatter part? I wish I could see a pix of where the water should be up to on this motor

If you didn't have the water pump submerged, in all probability the impeller is toast and will require that the water pump be dismantled and inspected.

Narrow part/fatter part? Have no idea what you mean by that. The lower unit (propeller, gears, etc) is bolted up to the rest of the engine with four (4) bolts. That area is the top of the lower unit and the water pump sits directly on top of the lower unit.

You must have that top surface of the lower unit a couple inches under the water.

I will totally submerge that then and try again. The output area was puffing air really hard and I didn't have the motor running very long maybe two minutes tops.

I plan on replacing the pump etc. anyway. I just want to try and see it run a bit first!

How much for a water pump kit containing all parts I need to rebuild it?

Anything else I should be replacing etc.?

Also I think I have a lower unit gear oil leak. Is there a kit available to replace all of the gaskets and seals at once?
