"Hello and thank you for this incredible forum. I have a 40 hp electric with a lower unit that has a small crack on the lower side near the drain plug. I would like your opinion as to what the proper course of action would be. I have a clymer manual which tells me nothing about dropping the lower unit on the electric model. I would like to break it down and have the piece welded, then rebuild it. What would you suggest?"

look for a good used gearcase or put your money into somthing more current parts and people that work with these motors are getting rare good luck

If the motor is in good shape

If the motor is in good shape then repairs /getting used parts are worthwile. You just need to look just a bit more to find them and a greyhaired mechanic who knows how simple these things are.

"The motor is new to me. However, The folks I bought the boat from are good friends and this was a dandy. Very reliable. Left one winter without draining the lower unit.

"Lower units should never be drained. This would allow condensation to occur, leading to rusting of the inner components.

If that unit is cracked to a point whereas water can enter the gearcase, and it has sat for a period of time, I would suspect that problems exist within."

"I am referring to draining and refilling the lower unit oil. That being said. it has been a season, with oil still slowly leaking until this spring. It is a slight outward crack. I assume it is from having water in the unit and letting it sit through a Michigan winter."
