Can anyone help me clarify how to correctly wiring my ignition switch on a '66 Evinrude 80hp Starflite? I currently have a six terminal switch but am not sure if this is correct. I've attached a scan of my service manual showing it but it's not clear to me which terminals to hook to. It also show a ground coming off the switch. I'm probably making this harder than it should be. I sure appreciate any help. Thanks

If the following is incorrect, reply with a precise description of your old switch etc and the wires attached to it.

----------------------
Your present switch has 6 terminals marked.... B, A, M, C, S, M, not necessarily in that sequence.

I assume your old 3 terminal switch had its terminals marked BAT, I, and S.

There were quite a few RED wires attached to the "I" terminal of your old switch.
Connect these RED wires to the "A" terminal of the new switch.

There was a BROWN wire containing 12 volts attached to the BAT terminal of your old switch.
Connect this BROWN wire to the "B" terminal of your new switch.

There was a WHITE wire attached to the "S" terminal of your old switch.
Connect this WHITE wire to the "S" terminal of your new switch.

On the back of my ammeter it has S, I, G, and L. I'm assuming G is ground and L is light. Does the wire coming from the starter solenoid go to the S terminal and I goes to ignition?
Thanks

What odd markings. Whatever, the diagram that I posted is correct, except it does not include the light, which is connected to the boat's running lights, not to the motor's wiring.

How about posting a picture of the back of the ammeter. A picture is worth a whole bunch of words.

Well ok, gotta admit it is an ammeter. And a busted one at that. So the connections are kind of a mute point.

But if you were to be able to salvage it, it is obvious that the two posts with the foil strips going to the light are to serve that function. Those two would connect to your boat's running lights. The other two would be the Bat and Gen ammeter wires, per the diagram I posted. If you cannot determine which is which, just guess. You have a 50% chance of getting it right, and if you get it wrong, just switch them. And no, it won't damage anything if you get it wrong, all it will do is read backwards.

Back around 1961/62 to about 1967... they had a 20 ampere rating. Then it went to somewhere around 6 to 12 ampere (somewhere in that area). In 1985 the 20 ampere stator came into view again.

Bottom line.... the ammeters had various ratings but the wiring setup remained the same with the terminals being marked BAT and GEN with the BAT side always leading "FROM" the generator or alternator, and the GEN side always leading "TO" the "B" terminal of the ignition switch.
