You may in principle use any OMC remote box or any outboard box (Mercury not recommended) as long as it goes for shift and throttle only. It is more a question of cables. The original box used Long Life cables that might be difficult to get, the newer boxes use(d) Snap On cables.
If you still have the original red plug for the electrics on the engine, try to get a newer box.

I just bought the motor no control box or cables. would love to use one that I could get parts for easily, not have to search for.
