"650 merc early 70,s vintage wont engage in reverse. sounds like it is trying to engage but is just slipping on the gear no forward or nuetral problems. prop will spin in reverse with muffs but wont under load in water."

"did someone have the lower un

"did someone have the lower unit off lately? Could be shift shaft out of sink, streched cable, or clutch dog."

"lower unit has not been off s

"lower unit has not been off since ive had the boat ,seems like the problem gradually worsened over past few years. the boat doesnt get alot of use, but would like to have reverse. how do i check to determine ,cable or clutch?? any help much appreciated."

"disconnect shift linkage at m

"disconnect shift linkage at motor, engage reverse by hand, this won't be easy, and see if it works in the water. a manual would be helpfull to verify rigging is correct. with shifter in nuetral and lower unit in nuetral there should be a mark on the linkage as a starting point for rigging. someone still could have messed uo the rigging in lower unit before you got the boat, and if the unit has not been off in years you should put a pump in it. Never shift controls into rev if motor isn't running, it streaches out the cable"

"i believe i have narrowed it

"i believe i have narrowed it down to the cblble beiing stretched. when i put it in reverse, while running, and push on the linkage it engages solid. is there adjustments for this ,?or do i need a new cable?"

"probably a new cable, you can

"probably a new cable, you can try to adjust that cable for its nuetral position but if there is too much play it could damage the lower end if it's not engaging all the way"
