I am new to boating and my old

I am new to boating and my old 6.5 johnson (not sure the year) that I just got will start and run for a few seconds and them just die. Sometimes it is hard to start somethimes it is easy to start but it will never stay running for more than 10-15 sec. Any suggestions on how to fix????
