Hey guys after working on my 64 Johnson off and on all summer. I finely got her running again however I've developed another problem that I thought I'd bring here before spending the remainder of my summer trying to get her back into shape again.
What is happening is I'm having an issue getting her into gear. She's become pretty stiff and requires quite a bit of force to get into gear. But once she's there she seems to run fine. She's always been pretty easy to get into gear until recently.
At first I thought maybe it was my shift cable binding up. I've unhooked that I proved it was something in the shift leaver mech itself. I rebuilt the lower unit a couple of years ago replacing some bearings, seals and bushings that where worn. I dropped the oil just in case something may have gone out on me and the oil is just as clear as it was when I changed it last fall before putting her away for the winter. To me it feels like something maybe binding her up. But I'm not sure where exactly to start.
Now one thing I did notice there does appear to be a grease zirk on the engine housing next to where the internal shifter mech would be. To me it doesn't look like it has ever been used to grease anything and I'm wondering if that should have been used to lube the shifter of the years.
