"Engine not running. Disconnect shift and throttle cables. Spin prop and put into forward gear. Apply throttle to full throttle.

Observe the timer base (armature plate) under flywheel as it must go up against its full spark advance stop. Observe the throttle butterfly as it must go to a full horizontal position.

If these two areas are okay, one or both of the control cables are set wrong.

"Electric shift does make a difference. Does the rig plane well up to a certain point, then the engine races away in rpms and the boat slows down?"

the boat will plane at about 1

the boat will plane at about 1/3 speed. it does not race up. sometimes it shifts into fwd fine other times not. i have push button controls they seem to be ok. could it be something in the lower unit not letting it go fully into fwd?

"In comparison to the throttle

"In comparison to the throttle handle position at full throttle, just where is the throttle handle at the 1/3 speed you speak of..... and what happens after that?

Sounds like you're saying that the lower unit does not go into forward gear most of the time. If so, check the wires at the engine that lead to the lower unit for the proper (12v) voltage.

The electric shift setup is such that it is either fully in gear OR it is not in gear at all. There is no such thing as not being fully in gear."

"pushing the throttle handle a

"pushing the throttle handle all the way up it only runs about 1/3 speed. three days ago i was out it started out slow( with throttle full speed) then just kicked in to where it should be, the full 40. The next day it just stays running at a slow speed. I did check wire connections at the motor and it seems fine. I turn the key on put in fwd or rev i can hear the lower unit switch gears."

"That would indicate that the

"That would indicate that the engine would be running on one cylinder, then suddenly have the remaining cylinder kick in.

What is the compression readings of that engine?

With the spark plugs removed, the spark at cranking speed should jump a 1/4" gap with a strong blue lightning like flame... a real SNAP! Does it?

Spark plugs should be either Champion J4C or J6C plugs, gapped at .030. The J6C might provide improved performance."

"You may use the 50/1 mixture

"You may use the 50/1 mixture on that engine.

Remove flywheel, inspect coils for cracking, etc. Condensers may have failed, clean or replace and set points.

Use Champion J4C or J6C s/plugs gapped at .030.

(Point Setting Of Magneto Models)
(J. Reeves)

Set the points as follows. Have the flywheel key aligned with the fiber rubber portion of the ignition points. Adjust the gap so that a .020 gauge will pass thru but a .022 will not. Should there be any question of the points being dirty (touching the contact with your finger would cause them to be dirty), clean them with a small brush and acetone or lacquer thinner.

NOTE: Should the operating cam have a small portion on it with the word "SET" imprinted, align this portion with the fiber rubbing portion instead of the flywheel key.

"i replaced points, condenser and coils i have a strong spark on both now just waiting for t-storms to pass to give it a test run. i'll get back with the results. Thanks"
