how much water should flow out the outlet. i was out on the lake with it first time with this motor and noticed that their was not a lot of water coming out it just kind of spitted and sprays out but no steady stream the boat has a red over heat light on it. and it works it never came on. the outlet is 3/4 inch or so, so i don't think it would flow steady but i have no idea . at idle almost no water comes out at full speed it kinda sprays. i think that i need a new impeller if so what level of difficulty is this. do you just drop the housing and replace the impeller and housing and line up and push back in place or is this way more difficult then a novice can handle

The water should shoot out of that outlet with great force along with the exhaust. Water also exits out of the opening just above the propeller.... but that outlet hole a short distance down from the rear of the powerhead should really be shooting out a heavy spread.

thanks for the answer it was as i feared. as for the level of difficulty to pulling the bottom of the motor how difficult of a project is this. is it for the experienced only or can someone with a mechanical ability and a manual do this job and is there a possibility that thermostat is stuck. as i understand it the water goes through the inlet at the bottom of the motor up into the thermostat housing into the port at the cylinder wall around the motor then out the other cylinder port back into the thermostat housing and down the outlet to atmosphere

Keeping it simple.... Water travels into the block, to the heads, to the thermostat, then out.

Is the engine electric shift or mechanical shift?

yes at idle thats what it does but at higher speed it flows better but not like a house hose and that is the diameter of the outlet . but on the other engines the outlet is smaller about 1/4 inch or so and they have a steady stream so that is what confuses me i mean that if this one is suppose to do that it would have to pump a vary high volume of water many gallons per minute it does not do that it just sprays out with some exhaust to. also if the thermostat works like a car maybe its stuck ?

At idle it just spits out and at full throttle there is a lot more.----------When you slow down it spits out a lot untill the motor " cools down some "---------------Most of the water goes out with the exhaust on the bottom.------------------If you have no idea on the condition / age of the impeller you MUST install a new one. They only last so long and deteriorate with age !

yes that is what i was thinking that is what i do with a every used car i buy timing belt water pump if i don't know. and yes i just bought this boat in an action spoke to owner, in family for years well keep but looks like its pretty stock nothing major done. i made appointment to have work done but would like to do it my self what level of difficulty is this it looks pretty straight forward but i have not really work on many out OBM

Just some nuts and bolt type work.---------------Just work carefully, feeding the electric shift wires down.---Attach something so you can pull them back up.

Remove rear exhaust housing cover, side plate and also inner side plate from exhaust housing, sliding the inner plate off of the shift cable. Attach a snake string as "Racerone" suggests.

It's been my experience, working on those engines even when new, that water would shoot out the relief hole with a great force even at a dead idle.

thanks for the info both of you guys have been very helpful with this, also i found YouTube to be very helpful also with matching what you two have written with visual aid this looks pretty straight forward nut and bolt fix. again thanks racerone and joereeves

hello again i have pulled the lower end and guess what its all brand new . yet like i said at ideal almost nothing comes out and at full throttle it spays but i watched some YouTube and your right i think more should flow through it the one i watched was of 1960 40 horse evinrude so close. even the coper pipes are new. i will try to flush out the motor with hose and put back together. the hot engine light works and it didn't go on when i had it out so i will let it go. it was nice to know how easy this is and that it is new. piece of mind at least and that the boat was as well keep as i thought
