"Hi there,

First I hear of

"Hi there,

First I hear of a 2 stroke with a timing belt...

As David said, we're sure the old Sea Dawgs will assist.

I'd replace the impeller as a matter of course. Not too sure what the gas oil mix should be on those older motors. I read here, recently, that some older models need to be 25:1. Newer (post 70's, I think) motors are 50:1. Replace the lower case lube too.

Regards from a wintery Johannesburg in South Africa,

Benjamin."

"Sorry Larry, you have a littl

"Sorry Larry, you have a little stumped here. The 1963, 2 stroke, 50 horse (model 500) doesn't have a "timing belt".

It did have a shaft driven distributor, but I am not aware of a belt anywhere - this particular model didn't even have a belt driven alternator.

So not quite sure what you are referring to..."

"Very sorry, took a close look

"Very sorry, took a close look at the parts list and do see your timing belt. It runs the shaft for the distributor.

Not sure if you will find anyone here that can explain how to time this though - most of us had the same reaction when you mention a timing belt - may have to spend a few bucks on a seloc's manual for that vintage to find the proceedure....."

Really---All the mercury motor

Really---All the mercury motors from the early 4 cylinder in 54 or so to the last distributor ignition 3-4-6 cylinder motors (1976 ) had the timing belt and all are the same part number. You have to pull the flywheel and the wee cover on the distributor and line up the timing marks that are there. Easy really.

What gives here " advanced

What gives here " advanced member " and " senior member " and are not aware of a timing belt on mercury motors------ sad really.

"Nothing sad about a couple of

"Nothing sad about a couple of guys who obviously spend alot of their time trying to help out the best they can for nothing, not purporting to be professionals, but simply guys willing to look up information, specs, proceedures to help out other "back yard" mechanics get their motors working for them again without dropping 100 bucks or more an hour in a shop.

What is sad is the fact the others will just drop in at random and pass judgement. You obviously have significant experience spanning many years, why not simply establish yourself as a real member so that individuals can seek out your advice instead of coming back to the forum every once in a while, with a different name each time, after others have got tired of your rhetoric...."

"Well said Graham. On that no

"Well said Graham. On that note I have nothing more to say.
Back to the original question. I do have some information in a repair manual that may help.
If you want to Larry, you can click on my name to get my email address. I can pass on the information if you like. I'd recommend picking up a manual for yourself anyways. They are only $10 or so on ebay."

"Graham, Graham, Graham!!!

"Graham, Graham, Graham!!!

Almost sounds like a Jerry Springer chant...

Graham, when you're fed up with this job, you could run for president in my country! You'll have my vote anyday. Well stated, mate!

I'm a youngtser in this game, no tech history in the field. What I know, is what I've learnt through other techies and forums. This one being the best by a long yard.

We might not always know everything, yet Ye Olde Sea Dawgs always get us going again. Besides, we do have a life outside of boating too...

Many thanks for all the help I've received from the registered users and I believe that my 2 cent's worth has helped others in need.

As they say here in my home language: "Stuur hom binne in sy moer in!"

Case closed.

Hamba Khatle! ( go well in Zulu. PR: hum-ba gha-sh-le)

Kind regards!

Benjamin."
