63 evinrude exhaust question

I own a 63 Evinrude outboard. I just put a new water pump impeller in it for preventive measures. This is the first time I have run this engine. I was under the impression that the exhaust and the water on outboards came out of the exhaust. This engine seems to be pushing out water and exhaust out just above the prop in a port in the lower unit. Can any one tell me if this is proper or if I have a problem that needs to be addressed. When I ran the engine it did not seem to be getting hot. I just want to make sure that the water is coming out where it is suppose to before I do damage to the engine. Thank you for any of you input.

63 motors are " not all the same " post a model # and perhaps a picture of where the water and exhaust exit.----------------I think it is likely normal in the way those motors operated.

The engine as I said is a 63 and it is an electric shift. Also when i had the lower unit of there were 2 water tubes going from the water pump to the power head. This is different from all the other water pumps I have seen on all of the pictures I have seen. I will post a model number tomorrow I do not have it written down.

Thank you

Normal.
Some will discharge exhaust and water out of the exhaust port on the back of the engine as well as through the port under the cavitation plate.
As long as the engine isn't heating its fine. But, keep an eye on it the first time out. A hose is not the best way to check the operation of a water pump, a test tank is much better for this test.

Good luck.

How can I tell if the engine is overheating. I have heard of crayon sticks that melt at different temps can they still be found or is there an easier way to tell if the engine is getting too hot?
