Well ROOKIE here ... all caps because I am a huge ID10T
Seems I have started out in classic rookie style...
Any way my post this evening is concerning me and my son and our new project.
I had a old popup camper i traded straight up for a 1967 14Ft Starcraft Falcon with
a 1963 Evinrude 40HP Big Twin.
She is in decent shape, alot of factory stuff removed and a bunch of crazy stuff added
But anyway the stoopid thing fired right up in the mans yard had a shimmy to her but i figured
it was a fouled plug. After all it was a older gentleman i was getting it from seemed trustworthy
Well i traded with the gentleman, Let me say i am in no way upset or mad at this man.
After all it was my responsability to check the boat out thoroughly and i did not do that.
I am extremely happy with the boat overall the hull is in really great shape and me and
my son will have alot of fun together rebuilding her.
Now i am done with the explination of the ID10T moment
1963 Evinrude 40 HP Big twin....
Is she worth rebuilding?
Seems the top cylinder has suffered a severe problem
I cannot get the head completely of yet as the two center bolts holding it on are frozen
in place and i have already broken one of them off.
The piston appears to have been beating up against something for quite a while
Severely pitted and beaten like there has been a BB or something in there
absolutely NO compression on this cylinder
Cylinder 2 has compression
i have not put my gauges on the engine yet
Just plugged the hole with my finger
Top Cylinder Nuttin
Bottom Cylinder could not stop the compression from lifting my fingers even though i tried
The trade came with a Parts engine as well, its mostly intact
Apparently the powerhead starter carb and flywheel are all in place
No coil packs and the wiring appears severely weathered but the core is there
Have not tested this engine for compression either just spun the flywheel
She moved well and you could hear air escaping from the vacant spark plug holes.
We all know what a new engine would cost
So I guess i need to know is she worth rebuilding, or do i scrap it and buy another engine
I am no outbourd mechanic but i know my way around a engine
