62 MPI Misfire at 2000 revs

Tx for this Mark

I can only go by what they told me and that was exactly that the distributor jumped 2 teeth and they have no explanation for it.

They have tested the boat putting everything back together, all be it leaking as I need new timing chain cover and a few water pump gaskets, and they are now convinced that was the problem and it is sorted.

When you refer to running time are you referring to more than the 10 mins they tested it and all seemed to be ok?

As for the experts, those are who I used here in South Africa.

I had to import the parts directly for my own account. It is my intention to take this up with them once the problem is resolved completely.

I appreciate your input.

I'd give it at least an hour, at operating temp, then let it cool completely, then give it another hour the following day, weather permitting. Only if no hiccups occurred on either outing would I declare issue resolved.

Do you need a new timing cover because they bent it taking it off or was the chain slapping on the inside gouging it out?

Is the leak oil, water/coolant, or both?

What I was told is that you cannot reuse the timing cover and as such I need a new one.

I think it was put back just to test the problem was resolved and when they tested it the problem was not there but it leaked oil.

I will keep you advised after 2 hours of testing.

Be advised the oil pan must come down to do this job correctly, If there is not much room, The engine should come out of the boat for this.

Are they aware of this?

Do they have the correct service manual for your engine?
Mercruiser service manual part number 90-864260T00 - SERVICE MANUAL #31 V8 ENGINES 5.0, 5.7, 6.2. ??? Good luck with it.

They should as they are the "spe******ts" the have brunswick's full accreditation but they did cost me $7000 in parts and labor to establish the distributor was out of place!!!

My next question is was the removal of the timing cover part of their trouble shooting or to get to the problem of was it to get to the distributor.

Reason I ask this is when / if I take action against them was it mandatory that this part came off?

ok the latest is that the distributor never jumped 2 teeth, it merely shifted a few degrees.

I am not sure why I am being given a pack of stories from these guys.

I can only suspect that they are embarrassed that they had to replace all the parts and sepnd all the time and what they overlooked was a cardinal error!

Do you know if they removed the front cover, Or did it just start leaking on it's own? By the way they have been known to start leaking on their own, And that could be the case. Good luck.

FATHER HELP ME!!!!

The more this saga drags on the more it is actually starting to sound like a prank!!

We are into our 8th week without a solution.

In sumary this is where we were.

1. Did all sorts of tests
2. Replaced both fuel pumps.
3. Replaced ECM.
4. Checked all injectors.

10 days ago the mechanics flown into to solve the problem had a eureka moment and said they found the distributor had jumped 2 teeth.

They then replaced it to its correct position and said the boat was running perfect but now because they had stripped the boat the timing cover needed replacement.

Well the timing cover arrived from the US, was fitted and the problem ws still there.

The mechanics found the distributor to be loose again and cant explain why it was loose???

Now the problem is still there and they suspect that there is a noise in the motor???

Can anyone shed any light on this???

A Sticky Valve

That is the latest.

They took the cover off and one of the valves in sticky!

I got the boat hauled to the workshop today and now hope and pray that that is the problem.

I am not sure what the fuss was about the distributor??

Something does not makes sense in what they have told me?

Herewith the latest report fro the Brunswick Manager for Africa:

Steve from S&D Marine has opened the engine to investigate the issue of the valves. He has also opened up the crank train to find severe damage to the big end & main bearings. The scuff which has been in suspension has obviously been affecting lubricity on priming of the valve train also. With bearings spinning in this way and the scuff materiel being in suspension with all the valve lifters and valve guides , this would create affect timing and firing of the engine in the internal combustion chambers. Possibly on more than one cylinder at times.

Steve will write a report on his findings.

Considering this problem and the ramifications it has on the running of the engine we are satisfied that the diagnoses undertaken has not been a simple matter to locate. Certainly with the oil pressure affecting the valve train in many different ways, this would have affected the type of problem seen when testing.

Which ever way we look at this problem the engine had to be stripped down to assess the problem in full.

We do not have the full history of the engine ,but for damage of the bearings to occur in this way is normally associated with excessive or prolonged hi RPM usage or excessive hi speed water exiting which motions Axial crank shaft play. Bearing damage of the mains and big ends is normally witnessed.

Steve will need to draft up a quote of what is needed should the engine drive train be in a usable condition.

As an option should it not be viable to repair a BOB tail unit (engine complete without drive) could be considered.
Please discuss with Steve on this.
