"Hey guy's i have a 62 evinrude that is giving me starting problems, it'll crank over to stark 2-3 seconds later it'll dieout. i disconected the wires to the cutoff swich,if the oil mix makes a difference it's mixed to 25:1, i also got to the points trough an opening on top of the fly wheel I lightly sanded the points with fine paper and set back to .020 as it indicates. I took off the plugs and checked the pistons for side play; they're pretty solid. should I be looking for a new set of points or is there something else I should be looking at? did take apart the carburater and there was no gum build up. Dose the excelarater need to be moved when setting the points? or just set them with the excelarater on low? thank you for any advice"

"The things you want to start

"The things you want to start with is a few tests. Check the compression, you want to have equal compression between the cylinders, within a few lbs of each other. Without good compression anything you try is a waist of time. Next is the spark, you're gonna need a spark tester of some kind, you want spark that will arc across a 1/4" gap. Checking for spark with the spark plug does'nt tell you how good the spark really is. My guess is that you'll have to pull the flywheel and take a look at the coils. The points and condensers, as well as the plug wires are pretty cheep, and I usually change them anyway. Check it out anyway, you may have a loose/shorted wire or something obvious to cause problems. The carb, it may not look fouled but all it takes is a spec of junk in the jets to keep to motor from running right. Sometimes it's better/easier to clean and rebuild."

"I guess i can purchase a compression tester at an aouto shop, will it give me a good reading just by pulling on the cord? do you know of a web-site that i can purchase these parst your recomending? I've also read about an electronic conversion kit for these older motors, it's a 62 fastwin 10 hp"

"Pull the cord, with the choke

"Pull the cord, with the choke off, throttle wide open, four or five pulls should give you a pretty good reading. A compression tester from auto store is fine. Before buying the parts, try to get things cleaned up, see what you got, but you should be able to find parts on this web site, top of the page "Engine Parts" tab. I've seen, looked at the magnatune ignition kits (18-5101) to replace the points. Looks like a good idea, they cost something like $50.00. You might want to look at a service manual, and a parts catalog. They makes finding parts, and working on these motors alot easier. You also can always go to your local Johnson/Evinrude dealer for help looking up parts. It also helps to post the model number of your motor.
