"I finally got it running and had it in a bucket but i noticed there was no water being pumped out when it was running so i shut it off. would that be a bad impeller?? It had been sitting for about 6 years until i recently got it. I have changed plugs, wires, lower unit oil, and cleaned carb and greased everything i could and she starts right up. anything else i should do in order to not tear this thing up. i would be glad to get any help that i could. thanks for any info you could give me!!!"

"No doubt it could use a new impeller at a minium.

By bucket, hopefully you mean a good size trash can. Water must be 2" or 3" above the seam where the lower unit meets the long exhaust housing in order to pump properly.

Thousands of parts in my remaining stock. Not able to list them all. Let me know what you need and I'll look it up for you. Visit my eBay store at:

yes my "bucket" is a trash can and it had plenty of water. when you say at a minimum what else do you think i should do to make it water ready? I do have a kicker motor just incase but would really enjoy it if i didn't have any problems when i take it out. Thanks for the quick response Joe. Oh.. is changing the impeller a tough task? im new to outboards but i am mechanically inclined to figure stuff out...

"Plate with 2 screws on side of long exhaust housing, remove it and the plate under it. Remove only one of the 3/8" bolts you'll see in the shift linkage. Remove lower unit retaining bolts and drop the lower unit. Water pump is obvious.

Minimum? If you can find a complete water pump assy, install it, BUT (at a minimum) just install the impeller."

can i change the impeller with

can i change the impeller with the motor on the boat? I took the shell off the back of the shaft. what do i do next. I soaked the plate with penetrating grease cause they are rusted shut. the book i have tells what to do when i get inside but doesn't tell me how to get the lower unit off to get inside

"Plate with two screws on the side of the long exhaust housing, remove it along with the plate you'll see inside after removing that one.

Remove just one 3/8" hex head shift bolt from the brass shift connector.

Remove the retaining bolts that hold the lower unit to the long exhaust housing.

The lower unit will now drop away. The water pump will be obvious on top of the lower unit."

"Doing that job on the boat is normal BUT if doing that job over the water, use great care and have a strong magnet on a long cord handy."

Hey joe I got a question. I got it apart following your instructions. thanks. The impeller looks fine but there is a lot of corrosion in the housing it sits in. do you still think my problem was the impeller or do you think i should replace anything else? I cleaned it and blew it out with air. any tips?
