60HP Merc -- Oil Injected

docs

New member
Hi All,
I am new to the boating scene and I have a 60hp Outboard Merc that I just want to make sure that the oil is being injected properly as the float sensor has been disconnected. I took the boat out for two hours the other day and only used roughly 1/2 quart of oil. Is this normal. The enging ran great, but I don't want it to wreck it.

Thanks

A factory manual would describe a test.-------------Basically operate the motor from a tank with 50:1 mix.--------Collect and measure how much oil is pumped out in a 10 minute period at a fast idle.----A dealer might do this while you watch for a nominal fee.

The oil pump will mix anywhere in the 50:1 to 100:1 range depending on rpms.

So if we are "guessing", say it averaged 75:1 and you burned 1/2 quart. If it was running properly you would have burned somewhere around 37-40 quarts of gas (9 or 10 gallons) - if that sounds about right, it's probably working ok.

These oil pumps either work or don't for the most part. And usually they work.

Over 99% are disconneted and by-passed because the "owner" is worried they will fail, not because they actually fail...
