I have a 1992 mercury 60hp elpt 2 stroke, arrived at boathouse this morning and I trimmed the motor down into the water as usual and turned the key and got the usual warning beep and when I tried the starter, nothing. Turned it off, turned the key again, now no warning beep ... no starter. Tried the trim button on the throttle, nothing, tried the trim switch on the motor, nothing. The fuel gauge usually activates on the ignition switch, nothing. Every thing else on the boat works fine, batteries are charged, cables all connected and clean. I checked the small automotive type fuse on side of electric cover on motor, it is fine. Is there a master control unit or fuse/solenoid/whatever that everything for the engine runs thru? Any help appreciated. This engine has been running fine on previous outings.

Check your grounds, give them a good cleaning and make sure they are tight.Check your 20amp fuse, but if you have nothing I'm more inclined to think battery connections

Does your engine have the pop-in fuse holder in the side of the electrial plate that is un-sealed?. These are known for getting corroded and loosing contact with the prongs. You can check this with a jumper wire in the two red leads of the harness. The other thing that can happen is the negative battery cable losses contact with the block. Sand down that area until the metal is shiny.

sure sounds like you lost a main ground (neg), time to get a DVM and start checking, I would start at the battery and work toward the engine.

Thanks for the suggestions, I removed the cover on the electric panel on the motor and discovered the pos. wire to the main panel was so loose it took 4 turns of the nut to re-tighten. I had a new stator installed last year and assume the marina did not re-tighten properly. At least it failed in the boat house and not out on the lake. All better now!
