60hp 3 cyl drive shaft spline seal fitment / directions

Hi there, so upon removing my lower unit 3 months back notices the 2 little seals on drive shaft at the top, one fell out - they were in fine condition, and a chap said i could leave on out cos its not too important (water seal) - anyway - i still have it somewhere..

I remember one was rubber and the other hard plastic, which goes on first? iirc the rubber one was half splined - and looked like it could only slip on with the splines going one way (up) and the wider jacket area going over the thicker non splined section of the drive shaft - does the plastic one just sit ontop of that?

Would this cause the lower crank seal to leak?

I would put the seal back in. There is also a small spring adding downward pressure on the drive shaft.

oh man, missed that!!! apologies-

does that actually fit inside crank seal or is it just a water seal for splines?

It is just a water seal for the spline.
