"I have a 60 Mariner that isn't getting any spark to the plugs. I don't know if this is the correct seriel # 615 302311, this is what is on the side of the motor, I need to find out what is wrong, where to start, where to get parts. If anybody can help me I would appreciate it."

"Tim, any chance it's a 675-302311?

The 60 Mariner was built by both Yamaha (for Merc) and by Merc (just a Merc painted different), but the two models are nothing alike.

In fact, the Yami Mariners came out in a couple different versions, so when it comes time for parts it is absolutely essential that you know what exactly it is that you have.

The Yami models had a CDM ignition system, the Merc's a Thunderbolt 4 - very different and it sounds like you have an ignition issue.

So in an attempt to narrow down what you have is this a 2 or 3 cylinder motor?

If (my) serial 675... is correct, then you have a 1978 Yami built model. And if that is what you have it could be quite challenging finding any parts for this motor which has been discontinued for about 30 years now."

"Thanks for the quick response

"Thanks for the quick response. It is a 2 cylinder, and it looks like it would be 675-302311 and it has that CDM box on it. Just my luck that parts would be hard to find. Is there a way to try and narrow the problem down before I take it to some one and they tell beat me out of hundreds of dollars? Thanks again."

"The ignition coil (stator

"The ignition coil (stator) can be tested with an ohm meter as can the coils - I can dig out the numbers and post or email them for you.

This model has a charge coil, a lighting coil and an (ignition) coil under the flywheel, so there is a pile of wires coming to the CD box.

The coils themself (under the flywheel) are no longer available and were expensive when they were.

The CD box is the make/break part - it's still available but sells for over 600 bucks - not worth it in my opinion.

Really, almost any ignition component on this motor would move it into the "not worth fixing" catagory unless you could find a source with used parts."

"Contact Golden Seal marine &#

"Contact Golden Seal marine ( http://www.goldenseal.com.au/?stg=46 ). You'll have to email them directly, but they know their stuff.
Parts ARE available for this engine both new and aftermarket. Dealers will tell you they're not, but they're just too lazy to bother looking them up. I just received a complete powerhead gasket set, rings and water pump kit from Golden Seal, genuine Quicksilver no less..........
Sierra are just one company that make parts for these engines.
Also plenty of used parts out there, these engines were brought into teh country in decent numbers, I've seen a half dozen on Ebay in teh last 3 months alone. Arizona outboard wreckers is just one place to try. A quick Google search will turn up a whole bunch of outboard wreckers.

Regards, Andrew."
