hi all. i want to no if i can plane my head down.the block is in the shop getting bored i figure this will be a good time to plane head.i am unsure how true the head is right now i have seen were you get a piece of glass and using a grit compound you resurface the head on it to were the mating surface is shinny.i thought a machine shop could do a better job getting it true with planing.and would i get better performance if i was to have the head planed down to the max speck.or is this something not done on outboards.and for the block surface is there any steps to take or do i just clean it to a shine and leave it alone. any feedback will help thanks tony

Use the glass-------------------easy to do ---------------worldclass job in minutes---------------removes the minimum of material.

racer what type of compound do i use?And for the block surface do i do the same.I take it planeing the head down to max tollerence is not recomended. The reason i wanted to do so is because the piston kit i am using has a lower compretion ratio Vs the stock looper pistons. the shop said these pistons will run the motor better do to the new lower octain gas. this motor being a 1970 when gas had a higher octain value this made good sence. but if i could add a little performance to the motor i thought by planing the head down to max tollerence would do so.do i stand incorect.

This job is very easy----" elegantly simple "----------------Use valve grinding compound.-----The head is guaranteed warped, you will see that after the first attempt ( high on the ends )---------The blocks generally do not warp.--------So what pistons are you using that is so special???
