60 degree timing cover

Guys, I have to change a cracked flywheel cover on my boat that is on the water. I'm worried about not changing the timing. I don't have the boat close to look at but I'm thinking I can remove timing wheel and tab, linkage. And put everything back he same position. Anyone do this before? I changed starter drive gears years ago and had to remove cover. I don't remember any problems and it was at home so less stress if it didn't start. Any help appreciated.
