HI all.
Need help, iv got a 2005 caver, 33 super sport, only had the boat for 4 mth but have done about 1200 miles in it bring it up the Australian east coast in a week, its running twin 6lt mpi crusaders, closed cooling systems with shaft drives.
My conncern is , both engines wont to run at 95 c, any where above 3000 rpm, cruising is at closer to 4000, temp stays the same, even after 6hr of continues use.
One engine 40hr the other 800 hr, the new engine was a long block with new heat ex and all the other bits that get replace when a engine has fauid due to a over temp fault, no strains fitted from factory on raw water pick up.
Both raw water impellers changed, didnt make any diffrence, pulled one thermostate, and went for a run, once it gets to running temp, both temps the same, as it happened the freash water pump has allso been changed, a leaking seal, still same crusie temp, have pulled hose and checked oil cooler and heat ex, very clean, starting to think this is the temp these engines run at, am blowing some steam out the exhausts, not the main stream marine engine over here and ever hard to get any advice other than, put in mercury engines, crusader are no good, ill stick with the crusaders

Re: 6 mpi high running temp

are you saying there are NO strainers after the raw water pick up? There might be multiple issues going on but that would be my 1st concern.

If you're sending unfiltered seawater through then everything on the raw water side must be getting clogged up. That should be easy enough to rectify by adding some strainers after each pick up.

Re: 6 mpi high running temp

May not be too high. the CC 2005 engine manual says the overheat warning turns ON at 220 F (105 C).

I'd encourage adding the strainers in the raw water inlets.

May also be time to consider checking the elbows....Salt water with the elevated operating temps will only accelerate their demise. 5-7 years for an older (cooler) engine in the brine is a good life.

Re: 6 mpi high running temp

Thanks Bob,
Strainners where fitted to both engines when the port engine was repaced, the starboard cooling system was check and cleaned at the same time. Im thinking if it was elbows, there would be a difference between the new engine and the older engine, as the elbows where replaced on the new engine. If i can confirm that 95c is not where these eninges should be running, then ill go right threw the systems, Temp derate is at 105c, 10c not that much of a margin, but might be right ?

Re: 6 mpi high running temp

Yeah, I think 90 C is too high. The thermostats should be 170 F. How are you measuring the temp? One good way is to use a IR gun, at the thermostat. I believe the thermostat is attached to your heat exchanger.
