6 hp starting problem in the Netherlands

Hello all,

As a newby with evinrude outboards I can use all the knowledge and advice on this forum.

Two weeks ago I bought myself an Evinrude 6hp 1979 ( cdi ).
I replaced/repaired : 2 ignitions coils, fuelpump intake, waterpump and impeller , sparkplugs ( champion), carb. kit.

The problem now is:
I can't get it running. The rude won't start at all.
Spark is okay, compression is okay, fuel pump works ( it spits fuel when I pull the starter so I think it's okay.)

The rude will only give me one puff at the first pull of the day and after that; nothing at all. Dead!!!

Anyone any ideas what could be the problem???

From Holland with love.

What do you mean by "spark is OK"? Just holding the plug against the block tells you practically nothing.Get or make a spark tester,I made one by nailing two bits of copper wire,(two nails will do as long as you can bend them so they are 5-6 mm apart,)and soldered an old plug core to a length of wire to one end and a croc clip to the other .You didn't mention that you had checked the points.I would recommend cleaning and resetting (0.020").Set Low speed needle to 11/2 turns open and off you go.Keep us posted.

Goodmorning all (Dutch time..)

Thank you for your replies.

Plugwires : changed it already several times.
Sparktester : No, I thought that plugs against the block or 5mm away from it and still sparks will do the trick.
CDI troubleshooting : I will read it, hopefully I can understand it.....

to be continued

I made an sparktester and it seems that there is some good spark.
That good when I'm helding the plug about 5 cm away from the block, the plug will spark, about 15 cm it stil Sparks incl. electric shock.....

Is there a change that I'm flodding the engine, because the rude will only puf when it rested for an night and after that nothing at all.

@Racerone: I'm living in an small village near the city called Gorinchem, somewhere in the middle/south of the Netherlands. Close to national park "De Biesbosch" ( wetlands between two main rivers)

15 cm and there is stil spark at the plugs and a shock between my fingers....
Flyweel key is okay
Compression not tested with an meter only by hand and the fact that pistonheads and rings seems to be okay. I removed the head.

It's not a spark from 15 cm of lenght between plug and block. That would be awsome...
No, but when I keep the plug 15 cm away from the block it still sparks between the electrodes.

Any tips and trics for an powerhead removel. I want to check the lower seal ( leaking)
I took out 5 or 6 bolts but the powerhead is not coming loose.

Hello,

any tips or tricks to get the two bolts back in front of the engine. I'm now rebuilding the engine and those two in front are a pain to get in.
