6 HP fuel pump or carb rebuild?

I have an 72 evinrude 6 hp sn# 6202oj. It sat for 15 years. I put in a new impeller and it starts, but is hard to keep running. What should I change first, an new fuel pump or rebuild the carb. Or just do both. I want a dependable easy starting motor and I read this is a good one with lots of parts available.

The bulb on the hose is nothing but a manual fuel pump !!!-----------------So if it keeps running when you operate the bulb , then repair replace the fuel pump on the motor.-------------If it makes no difference when you operate the bulb then clean the carburetor , especially the high speed jet in the bottom of the bowl.-Also the passage way coming up the side of the bowl ( low speed circuit )----------------Ignition coils are often found cracked on these motors.----------Spark must jump a gap of 1/4" or more with a snap you can hear.----------Best to pull the flywheel to inspect the coils.

It seems like cleaning the carburetor and inspecting the coil are the first things to do.

Do you mean if it stops running, replace the fuel pump?
 
Which ever way you want to think about it !!!!!-------If it keeps running when you operate the manual fuel pump ( primer bulb ) and it stops when you stop squeezing the bulb.------Then you have a problems with the pump on the motor.-----------------If squeezing the bulb makes no difference then the pump on the motor is working fine.
 
Got it. Do you think it's a good idea to just replace the fuel pump on a motor that old. Just for the sake of dependablity. A new one runs about $50. Don't want to be caught on Lake Erie with a dead engine. It happened to me years ago and it is scarry.
 
You have a back-up in the manual pump ( aka --primer bulb in the hose )------------Those pumps are often replaced as a guess.-----Most of the time they work just fine for years and years.------------Real trouble shooting beats guess work every time.
 
That answered my question. If the bulb pump on the tank will work as a backup to get me off the water in a jam, I'll be satisfied and enjoy myself.
