6 hp Evenrude 1968

I have a 1968 Evenrude 6 hp fisherman motor that starts and runs good in neutral but will not shift into first or reverse. Also are parts still available and is this a hard fix or expensive

Either one of the shift rods has pulled out of the brass shift connector... OR... the linkage is broken under the powerhead at the end of the shift lever shaft... OR... someone has removed the philips screw from the skeg which would allow the shift lever drop out of the shift cradle.

Do Not Ever attempt to force the shift lever into gear unless either the engine is running... OR... someone is turning the propeller to align the shifter dog lobes with the gear lobes!
 
Pull the gearbox and see if the upper shift rod is connected you probably need a new impeller anyways. Is it a long shaft or a short shaft? Pull the four bolts holding the gearbox on and drop it down far enough to remove a bolt in the brass coupler it should pull all the way out.
