"Just bought this boat with an aq170b volvo engine. It's an inline 6 cyc. It hasn't been running since 2005, the guy said he did drain everything etc. The guy took water pump off to replace seal and never finished, he bought another boat. So anyways, I got boat and drained oil and a lot of water came out, no sure how much but it was almost clear looking for a second or 2 then milkly gray then black oil at the end. So I wased out by pouring a gallon of kerosene through engine and just cranking over a few times to try to wash out everything. Then replaced filter and new oil. Ran it for about 20mins just at idle. Checked oil, almost all milky. So let it set over night drained it again and wasn't as bad, but the oil and water was mixed so all oil was white milky. So refilled with new oil again. Now going to check it later, then run it. Any ideas where to start? Don't wanna spend over $300-$400. Also, is this a chevy engine also? Someone said they are interchangeable. Any help and advice would be awesome, I'm a newbie. Thanks!"

"Steven, what you have is a Volvo (NOT Chevy) 6 cylinder in-line B30 engine, a model that has not been installed in boats for about 35 years or more. To make things worse, the engine is raw water cooled, which means that block, head and manifold are exposed to a corrosive element.

In your case, the engine may have something as simple as a blown head gasket or a raw water pump leaking through the seals into the crankcase (this can happen if the tell-tale is blocked). But in any case, if there is something wrong with the engine block or head, the cost of repairing it would be prohibitive. Many parts are not available and many others cost their weight in platinum.

Also, the engine is not interchangeable with a Chevy.

Sorry to be the bearer of the bad news."

"Now this engine has 2 pumps. The inpellar which I think is the rubber pump. It's new, could it leak into the oil through that way. Then I have the regular water pump, it just bolts flat against the front of block. You think this thing is not worth fixing? Just get little money out of it? Is it a big job to put like a chevy 6 cyc in this thing? Doubt it would bolt up right or anything though."

"Just have a look at the price of the water pumps and draw your own conclusions.

About replacing the engine with a Chev 6 cylinder (I assume you are talking about a V-6), you will need a new bellhousing, new transom shield, new exhaust pipe, new set of gears for the lower unit in the outdrive.... Don't think you want to go there.

Volvo Penta outdrives are very reliable, but when you deal with equipment that is 35-40 years old and it was very expensive for starters, I suggest you may want to cut your loses before you start. Been there, done that, and you won't want to spend even a fraction of what I did.

Not sure what size of boat you have, but if it is 20' or more, you may want to consider buying a complete used package of a V6 or V8 Chev coupled to a VP 280 or a 275 drive. The transom shields of the 280, 275 and 270 have an identical bolt pattern."

"Well, check the head gasket and the water pump gasket. If they are to blame for leaking water into the block, replacing them aren't a big deal, just make sure you get the marine head gasket.
If temps go low where you are, you may have a frozen and cracked block. Then you are toast.
The 170 is not a great engine, it is a 4cyl prolonged with two cyls more to make a 3liter I6. May cause bad cooling in the rear two cylinders and blown gaskets there. Due to it's heritage you may replace (almost drop in) it with some of the Volvo 4 cylinder engines, the 2.0, 2.1 and 2.3. If your boat is not very heavy, you may be well off with a fuel injected 2.3 from the late 80s. It is not that much weaker and a bit lighter. And much sturdier. There was a 4.3 V6 drop in kit in the 90s (I think) but it needs new fixtures.
If you want to sell the engine, I think that you may be able to get rid of some parts, cams, top, starter, generator, fuel pump and carbs. But no fortune to be made."
