"I found a parts manual for a 1958 evinrude and they made an electric start model, but I don't see a generator or kit listed."

"I didn't see it listed as an accessory, maybe a later year. I will try and look through the manuals and see what I can find."

"No charging system, no generator option. Generator was optional on 35+ HP motors. Keep your battery fully charged between uses. Also the 18 starter mounted to the left and the 35 generator bracket to the same side and is larger so will not fit the 18. And the 35 starter bracket which mounts on the right is larger than the 18 so will not interchange if you are thinking of swapping it out. "

"thanks for all the input, I suppose I could have put a volt meter on the Battery at full throttle to see what I had, I guess Im getting too fat and lazy. I use a a higher end deep cycle marine/rv battery for this boat and will keep it charged for sure!!"

Anyone know where to get the box for this motor. I have a '57 electric start with cables but no box. Can only start by pull or touching the cables to the battery.

"If you have the cables you are well ahead of many people having the motor. One source I know of wants $135 for a replica cable from the motor to the battery. You might consider using the starter switch from an old International tractor. Connect the ground cable to the battery. Connect the positive cable to the switch and the switch to the starter. Eliminates the spark given off when shorting direct to the battery or engine block. If you use the touching cable method, which I do NOT recommend, connect the positive cable to the motor and the battery (as in use the bolts and nuts), connect the negative to the battery and touch the free end to the motor. DO NOT TOUCH TO THE BATTERY AS THE RESULT COULD BE EXPLOSIVE. I can not express that enough. Do not EVER connect the starter to the battery by shorting the wire to the battery terminals. As for the box, watch E-bay, post a wanted on Craigslist, aomci.org, the classifieds here, and any where else you can think of, and try not to hold your breath waiting for one. Sorry I can not give you any better news or ideas."

"I used to have an early 50's Evenrude with electric start. I replaced the battery cables cheaply from china-mart. The solinoid was purchased from Napa auto parts, along with a momentary on push button swich. No problems with the 6v starter using 12v battery, just spins over fast."
