"Got a 5.7 Mercruiser-1996 that started blowing oil out of the vents. Was getting blow-by in the starboard valve cover. Checked the valves and all look to be working fine....checked the compression and # 5 is dead...more than likely a hole in the piston.

Considered a rebuild - but now am looking at buying a long block from a marine engine supplier. Just checking for any advice out there before committing to the purchase. Looking at getting the long-block from Firstmate Marine.....any feedback welcomed and appreciated.

The boat is a 96 Bayliner 2050 Capri SS that is in very good condition (all fresh and indoor storage). I even went boat shopping, but for a similar model/comparable engine they want over 32k."

Your other engine parts are ol

Your other engine parts are old and worn. Consider a complete new or reman. drop-in engine for a few $$$ more.

"i have used many rebuilt engines from Jasper in truck applications, i consider them a quality product with a outstanding warranty. they will also rebuild your engine if you have the time.wichever route you go you should try to determine what happened to your engine,a hole in a piston would indicate a lean air/fuel mixture, you may need to richen up your main circuit in the carb a bit, good luck. .02 "

"I've heard good things about first Mate, have used Jasper for Marine and Atlantic Engine for Marine and Auto.

I agree with chris, tear the engine down a bit and see what happened, especially if it was caused by ignition(plugs, cap, rotor, wires) or carb."

"Brad I did a inboard merc ski

"Brad I did a inboard merc ski boat about 5 or 6 years ago and we happen to have a distributor of rebiult marine engines locally so it was not difficult to choose for us.

Anyway we purchased a 1996-97 350 roller cam one piece rear main seal block rebiult for $1900

you would need to swap the oil pan, intake and carb and all other periferals. All you get is a long block.

Once installed the boat onwer was thrilled as it ran better than his original ever did!!

Do your reaserch online.

Just so you know NAPA also sells rebiult marine motors. I amnot sure of the quality but they sell them.

you should also check out local engine biulders/suppliers in your area because if there is an issue it wont be difficult to handle it."

"I just purchased a longblock

"I just purchased a longblock 5.7 from a company in Florida called Rapido Marine. Of my searches they had the best price and warranty. $1500 delivered, no core, 15 month unlimited hour warranty. For an extra $185 I upgraded the cams to get an even 300hp. Starting the project tomorrow. I did purchase new hoses, alternator and fuel pump to keep future service issues down and to have spares on board should one fail while on the water."

"Thanks for all the input - ve

"Thanks for all the input - very helpful. I checked around and find nothing adverse about First-Mate Marine. I got a boat mechanic who will be doing the install since I do not have the equipment for the lift. Have swapped engines before in trucks and cars, but tis a different story.

He has used First Mate many times and all customers have been pleased over the past 5 years or so. They are definitely higher than Rapido unfortunately, but i do get a 2 year warranty. We will be tearing down the old one and do an autopsy.

Question for Sam - maybe i am wrong, but from the research i did there are a lot of variations in the 5.7. I provided the serial number and they still advised the 96 year models had two different styles (10 and 12 bolt intake). So i had to go back and count to make sure i was getting the correct match for the bolt ons. I mention this since I was looking at Rapido's site and they have them all lumped together for a large year difference.

FYI - we will be rebuilding the carb, replacing wires and obviously the plugs. Also getting the starter re-worked and swapping the bilge too. Also, there is apparently a bushing that needs to be changed at the connection between teh motor and "bell housing"."

"I had been having to add oil

"I had been having to add oil ever tank of fuel...was burning about 1/2 quart per 30 gallons for the past two years. Am anxious to see the ring condition.

While this is a pricey hit for a 96 model 2050, it is much less than buying a new one and paying forever on it. I will say that i can't complain - this is the first issue with the boat since I got it in 01'. I did go look at some used ones (late models) and was amazed at the lack of care some take with such expensive equipment. 07' wake boat looked like they had a bumper car contest in the thing....had a new engine also after 2 yrs???

Watched a guy last year in a brand new (smelled new still) Four Winns run the thing up on rocks sticking 4 feet above water line - cracked hull and bloody nose to go with his hangover!"

"I think back in '88 there

"I think back in '88 there were fewer choice, all is good for the swap tho! If you have time, surf Ebay for the parts you're looking for. I found plugs for 1/3 - 1/2 of retail and an Internet search yeilded very competitive prices for the other components. Good luck!"

i agree with brad on the way p

i agree with brad on the way ppl take expensive machinery and abuse it from day one acualy it sickens me. but them are the ones with money who will oneday find themselves broke. as far as buying the small parts off ebay i would rather pay store price and be able to take it back if needed wich we all dont want to wait on boat parts and get a same day swap than wait for ebay shipping and the postal service these days

"Well - I went to the boat show in Houston this past weekend...after talking dollars & cents I ordered the long-block for one i got
Tell me - how can they keep a straight face charging 40k for a boat and then want to charge you another 2k for a trailer!

Think the engine situation will be taken care of after throwing money at it."
