"I have a 2001 Volvo 5.7 GSI e

"I have a 2001 Volvo 5.7 GSI engine and when I put the outdrive in gear and get to around 1900 rpm's I start getting a loud knock in the engine. But, when I take it out of gear and just increase the rpm's there is no knock coming from the engine and it runs fine. This problem just started over the weekend.Could spark plug wires cause this to knock?"

"I would start checking that a couple of ignition wires have not been swapped accidentally. If all the leads go to the correct spark plug and the ignition timing is OK, then I would run a compression test to make sure the engine doesn't have sticky or burnt valve."
