"Hi, I have a 5.7 GS in my boat, carburated, etc. It have been running rough, and lately I hear a clicking noise at high RPM's, starting around 2500. I thought it was the out drive, but when I lift the engine compartment, its coming from the engine, and sounds like its backfiring into the carb. It has been sluggish, and using more fuel than usual. What do you guys think it is?
Thanks"

"Have you checked your timing, popping back through the carb is a sure sign of the timing being out. This will also account for the poor fuel economics. The problem could be more serious like a valve problem but i would give your ignition system a thorough check before getting to in depth."

"Jim,

Start with the basics. When was the last time your engine received a tune up? Check the condition / replace the following:

- distributor cap
- rotor
- plug wires
- timing
- plugs (check gap)
- clean carb
- fuel / water filter

Good luck."

I am going to do the tune up.

I am going to do the tune up. Do the fuel/water filter every year. How hard is the timing check?

"Not hard at all. Pick up a timing light at the local autoparts store. If you don't already have one, I would suggest purchasing a Clymers or Seloc manual as well.

Mark the 'notch' on the harmonic balancer with white nailpolish to make things easier to see. The timing is adjusted by rotating the distributor."

"Did the plugs, cap and rotor.

"Did the plugs, cap and rotor. The rotor was worn pretty bad, unsure how it even started. gotta do the port side now to be sure everything is good.
Thanks"
