"Good Afternoon all,

I have a 2003 Volvo Gi engine. It shut off on me the other day cruising at 3200 rpm (30 miles offshore) and I have not been able to figure out what is wrong with the engine. It was hard to start at the boat ramp. I took a wire brush and cleaned the distributor cap and rotor and it seemed fine afterwards. It was running along fine before it shut off. I have no fuel issues and the engine turns over normally. I have spark from the coil wire going into the distributer, but have no spark at the end of the plug wires. I have replaced the distributor cap, rotor, and cam shaft position sensor. After looking at the engine wiring diagram there are tons of sensors I could began replacing, but that could take awhile and be costly. I haven't had any other issues with this engine to date. I bought the engine and outdrive package with 30 hours on it and I have put about 50 more on it since then. Lastly, is it possible to check this engine with a OBD 2 code scanner/reader or do you have to have a MEFI4 code scanner/reader? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks Jason"

"Jason,
A OBDII scan tool will not work on a marine engine, but you can pull codes using just a paper clip and test light or 12 volt LED."

"Locate the Diagnostic Link Co

"Locate the Diagnostic Link Connector (DLC). Using a small paperclip, jump terminals "A" and "B" on the DLC. This puts the engine is "Service Mode". Then connect the test light clip to a 12+ source, and touch the probe end to the "E" terminal on the DLC. It will then flash trouble codes. If the self diagnostic system is working it will flash code 12 – one flash, pause, two flashes, long pause – it will repeat three times. If other codes are present they will flash in order of lowest to highest. Continue to read codes until the code 12 sequence is repeated.

You can also be clear codes (by moving the throttle to 100% and back) and set base timing while in Service Mode."
