57' 18hp Recoil spring keeps jumping off

That's really odd. Jumping off both pins?? Is this happening after it is all assembled? There shouldn't be enough room for it to get off the pins. Something just ain't right---can't tell what it is from here.

Yes assembled and tightened. After starting motor rope will recoil fine. Next time I try to start motor the spring will jump or disengage. This has happened 5 times. 3 with new spring so it was working fine.

As stated something is not right .--------Post pictures.-----------Have never seen this on a properly assembled unit.

My guess is that the pins are bent, but have never seen that in the thousands of motors I've worked on. Or the rope pulley has extraordinary wear & wobble. Sorry, I just don't have any better guess.

I'm in agreement with fdgator.... got to be a loose or bent pin. Check with a machine shop to see if they can correct that problem.

The alternative is to pick up a good used one from a outboard repair shop.

The part number of that pulley is #376666, however it has been "Not Available" since 1985, and at that time the list price of it was $52.85.
