"I have a 1956 30hp Johnson model RDE-18. The motor sat for about 3 years. I've changed the plugs. I placed a new cork/rubber gasket on the fuel tank, cleaned the fuel lines and bulb. I changed my normal fuel mixture of 1 qt non-detergent 30w oil to six gallons fuel to a 24:1 of Quicksilver premium plus tc-w3 and 89 octane. I ran the motor in a trash can and it ran fairly well. Quite a bit more smoke that usual. I was able to adjust the slow speed idle to smooth things out.
With everything checked I took it to the lake. It ran quite well for about 15 minutes. I had gotten into some weeds. I slowed down, shifted to reverse to clear the weeds. Back in forward the motor seemed to struggle getting out of the hole. I pumped the prime button to get more fuel but nothing. After running at idle for a few minutes, I attemped to get on plane. She jumped right up and took off. I continued to idle down and power up for about 20 minutes with the trouble coming about every 4th try. On my last attempt, I had slowed down to clear more weeds. When I went back to forward, the motor reved up but boat was not moving much more than idle speeds. I backed down on the throttle and idled back to dock. Long story short, I've reviewed postings and believe that I have a bad clutch dog. Could the lack of power be in any way related to the clutch dog or do I have another issue."
