" Does an RD-18 (56 30hp Johnson)have thermostats? I see two covers that look like possibles but do not want to pull them if it is not neccasary.

They are two small coveres with one located just below the intake and the other located on top of the block just inside the edge of the flywheel. Given the age of the motor, and its unknown history, I would prefer to replace thermostat(s)if they were used but do not want to pull those coveres only to find that they provide access to something I dont plan to tinker with. "James.... If memory serves me correctly, the thermostat on those type engines (2 cyl/low hp) did not exist until the production of the 1959 35hp Evinrude/Johnson.

The thermostat, if it existed, would be attached to the extreme top of the cylinder head under a plate which is secured with three slotted 1/4x20 screws. The thermostat and the screws would be in a vertical position.

No thermostat on that motor.T

No thermostat on that motor. The motor is unique in that the head gasket of a 55/25 does not fit nor does the 57/35hp. I believe that head gasket is no longer available from the factory.

Guess it would be a good idea

Guess it would be a good idea to keep an eye out for a head gasket that fits and snap them up when I get a chance then. Do you know of any aftermarket source for it if I need one>

"James/Sparky..... It's possible that I may have one left in my remaining stock, but I don't have the parts book on that model.

What is the original head gasket part number, or the numbers of any other item you might need? Click on my name above for my e-mail address if you care to.

" I am trying to positively identify a Johnson outboard that is on a 55 or 56 14' Lone Star Admiral Deluxe that I bought. The model number of the outboard is PE18E and the serial number is 1412890. I took both numbers right off the motor. I cannot identify a PE18E, but I believe it is a 30hp.

Both the boat and motor are titled as 55's, but I believe both of them are actually 56 models that were sold in late 1955. I also believe that the outboard is original with the boat.

I would appreciate any help in identifying this outboard motor. Thanks. "

" Sorry, I meant to post this as a new message. Good news is that I cleaned some more of the dirt off the plate and the outboard is a RDE18E. Thanks anyway. "

" Pete, The RDE-18 series is a 1956 Johnson Javelin 30hp. The E in this model numbers designates it as having electric start where my RD-18 was not. I do have a starter but based on the model I know it to have been added after market. Should you find a need I have a spare flywheel that was thrown in on the deal when I picked up the motor.

Happy tinkering.

In Pete's posts above he

In Pete's posts above he mentions the letter E at the end of his model number. RDE-18 designates electric start 30hp while my RD-18 is the same motor without electric start.

On my motor following the RD-18 I have the letter C.

Does anyone know what the trailing C and E would designate on these motors ??? Perhaps which plant they came out of ???
