Can anyone please help me find the timing marks? I see the 2 marks on the mag plate, but I can not seem to find the marks on the flywheel. any help appreciated. I just replaced the points, condensers and coils and need to make sure its timed properly.
thanks

No timing to set. Gap the points, as long as the mag plate rotates freely with advance in throttle position, timing is done.

Put the throttle at idle.-Rotate flywheel till top piston is at TDC.--Look at at the two lines on the magplate to identify the mark on the flywheel It should be near it then.--Just a notch on the flywheel and then one at 180 degrees to it.-----------Good that you are attempting to set the timing for peak ignition performance !

Racerone--Please explain how this sets timing? What are you adjusting to dial it in with regard to mag plate and flywheel relationship?

Thanks. so.... rotate until top cylinder at TDC. Move mag plate so lines on it are centered on flywheel notch. Remove flywheel and gap points. Repeat for lower cylinder.

This is a lot like using an OMC timing fixture.

On the same subject...... An old OMC guy once told me that these older, worn motors respond well to a little bit of extra advance in the timing. He tuned a 1964 Evinrude 40 hp I had at the time. It howled. Unbelievable, like it was new. All he did was adjust the points, with a little extra advance...so he said. What the heck did he do?

It is called a " magneto " --therefor the opening of the points relative to the magnets in the flywheel controls the timing !-----So visit the aomci website and do some research on the subject.----Nothing like doing the job the simple and easy way.

Racerone....Thanks for all of your help. It's called a magneto. That will help. Maybe yelling at it will help dial it in.

If you dont get a good spark and have to pull the flywheel plan on replacing the coils, points and condensers especially if the coils are dark blue or cracked!

He's already done that...read post number 1. That's why he wanted to know about the timing.

The factory provided timing fixtures to set up these magnetos for peak spark strength.------The flywheel can also be used to do this.-------Nothing like learning how to do this and have the satisfaction of the best possible results on these.

If you go to the ----aomci --------website you will find a member there ( Frank Robb ) who makes / sells the timing fixtures.--Many folks there who balked at timing these magnetos , now do it the elegantly easy way.----Using the meter also checks resistance across the points while setting the timing of the magneto.----When points open at the correct time you get maximum voltage developed for easy starting.
