"Robert, you have a 1985 "

"Robert, you have a 1985 "Marathon" model Mariner built by Yamaha, so the Seloc's guide for Mariners of that vintage would apply to your model.

Your serial is read as 663-271713.

Your manual recoil starter spring or one of the componets may be seizing a bit on you if you can otherwise turn over the flywheel by hand.

Sorry, I don't have any manuals in print or on computer that deal with the Yamaha built models, or I would pass something along..."

"You could but it would be incredibly costly - Merc does not stock the parts anymore, but when they did you would be looking at well over a grand.

You could try a Yamaha dealer and see if they could help you out.

In your serial the 663 part equates to the Yamaha series that this was from. Yamaha's Mariners were often designed after a line that they had run under their own name either earlier or had discontinued before they produced them for Merc.

If it sounds like I'm saying that the Mariners were inferior to Yamaha's, that's not exactly the case, it's just that Yamaha dressed their most advanced/leading edge designs as Yamaha's and basically used their partnership with Merc to get rid of parts etc that they no longer used in production (much the same as what Merc did with the Force line), it's just a handy way to get rid of discontinued parts...

The Mariners were well built, but usually lagged the newest technology by a few years.

The 663 series was a model of 55 horse Yamaha's built between 1974-79 and included a model A55E which was the electric start version - perhaps they either have parts or know how to retrofit something more recent..."

Here's a link to every diagram and part number that Merc has for your model...

You may have to find an earlier version of Selocs Mariner manual for 1 and 2 cylinder motors for it to specifically include the 55 horse - I will see what I can dig up..."
