I understand these were only made a couple of years. If so just wondering what kind of a job it is to get at impellor and if there is a kit I should buy before attacking this job.Procedure to do job is what I'm looking for I guess and any little tricks that could be provided. Thank you.

"The 55 Seapro used the same powerhead and lower unit as the 50 and 60 horse models of similar vintage, so ton's of parts available both new and used.

A waterpump "kit" (pic below) is a little pricey at just over 105 bucks, but worth it if it's never been changed. An impeller alone sells for about 25 bucks.

Not a difficult job at all, but a Seloc's manual (35 bucks) saves an "ooops" that could turn costly, and gives you step by step instructions, diagrams, tips/tricks and is great for the "next time" you need to do some maintanance (and there will be a next time)

"thank you for your answer and

"thank you for your answer and I understand if I have carb#wme 3301, 824854-0 you could tell me what year this motor is.Also where I can get this manual if I live in northern ontario, canada. Possibly a bookstore or merc dealers etc. So I don't have to order online and wait as fishing season here is short and would love to get this done as soon as possible. Thank you again."

"If you have a marine dealer &

"If you have a marine dealer (or better yet a Merc dealer) around they usually carry or can get the manual in - pretty standard.

Also available from a number of on-line sources (including this site) - Seloc's "Mercury/Mariner Outboards 2.5 - 275HP, 1990-2000 Repair Manual" would apply to this model.

The carb confirms the horsepower, but isn't much help as far as the exact year. Need the production number (serial) to figure that.

The 55 Merc entered production in 1992 and continued until 2005 when Merc stopped producing all but a couple of their traditional 2 stroke motors - it essentially lived on as the 50 horse which is still produced/sold outside of the US (so you can still buy them up here which means parts support is excellent from any Merc dealer).

Where about's are you "up north"

"can't find serial# don&#3

"can't find serial# don't see anything but carb with numbers. I live east of kirkland lake on. near the quebec border and fish are biting good therefore the urgency I am sure you understand. I was backing boat up into creek at the lake, motor in reverse and hit a gravel bar at low speed and noticed water flow which is usually a good flow go down to a trickle. would this spin the key way by stalling motor or am I looking in the wrong direction or is their possibly dirt and I know I am just guessing but symptoms are sometimes if not always a good way to heal the problem, thanks again"

"I would check the water intak

"I would check the water intakes on the lower unit first - it's more likely that you simply sucked up a bunch of muck/crud which stemmed the intake of water.

The impeller is on the drive shaft, so even stopping the prop solid would more likely cause a spun prop hub or gear damage than any damage to the impeller (unless it sucked in some very fine gravel and chewed things up) - so worth a look to make sure all is ok under the waterpump cover, but I really would check the intake for blockages.

There is a full service Merc dealer in Swastika which is probably about the closest to ya...

I can email you a piece from the service manual that may help. It's written however for those that already pretty much know what they are doing, so not the step by step that Seloc's provides - it assumes the user is a marine tech, but may be of value to you. If you are interested, click on my name and drop me an email with your motor (55 Merc - lower unit) as the subject and I'll get it off to you..."
