55 hp shifting backward

I have a 1977 evinrude 55hp model #55773D. When I shift in forward it will go in reverse. The lower unit has been replaced with one from a
Johnson tracker motor.

Wrong lower unit... nothing you can do but replace it.

For a few years the lower units shifted to forward with a DOWN motion of the shift rod.----------So you need to find somebody who knows what linkages you need to correct this.--------The linkages need to be changed on the MOTOR !!----A routine fix for someone who understands what is going on with this set-up.

Is the prop right or left rotating?

There were no opposite rotation props avaiable for a 1977 model 55 hp.-----It now has the wrong year lower unit .----It can be corrected with the proper linkages on the MOTOR.

Who sales the linkage that will fix it.

Step # 1 is to post a picture of what is on your motor now.----Starboard side of the block.

I've been through this myself and racerone is right. Try the outboard salvage yards, E-bay or Craigslist for the correct linkage.

Answer these ?---Do you have the year / model # of the TRACKER motor ?---Does the tracker lower unit shift to forward with an UP motion of the shift rod, yes or no ?-----------Does the the lower unit that was on your motor shift to forward with a DOWN motion of the shift rod , yes or no?------Answers will help us to help you !
