55 HP Evinrude wiring

Hi Guys,

I have a 1979 55 HP Evinrude.

It has been sitting for about 8 years since I hit the kill button and then couldn't get it to start again.

The engine itself and the carbs look to be in good condition, and I think I have found why it wouldn't start again (broken fuel clip).

A lot of the wiring has now corroded and needs to be replaced.

2 questions

1) Does anybody know if I can buy a new wiring loom/harness for this motor (Model No. 55979C - Not in the database either?)

2) In the event that I can't find a loom, what amp rating should I use for the wiring when I re do it? I pulled the fuse and it appears to be a 20 Amp (very hard to read), but the wiring looks to be 10 or 15 amp wire.

Thanks in advance, any help would be greatly appreciated. I am pretty green when it comes to boats.

Craig.

The wiring would be the same on all models except for manual starting ones.----Yes it is a 20 amp fuse.

Actually, the 20A fuse is way overkill. There is nothing on that motor even approaching 20 Amp draw. But the wire should be heavy enough that a possible short circuit will blow that 20A fuse before melting the wires.

Looks like 55979C to me.

It isn't the best photo, shot in the dark with an iPhone 5S (and is upside down? No idea how), but it serves its purpose.

Thanks very much for your help guys, I have gone from thinking this might be a showstopper to thinking its not that big a hurdle.

Yea I just confirmed using the same sight you can just use the 55975 parts diagram as it is the same year. Are you having issues with the harness going to the controls or just the engine harness?

Long shaft / shortshaft / electric start / manual start and even " hustler " models used different model numbers.-----Post some more pictures of this motor !!
