"I have a 1998 Chaparral with a 5.0L Volvo Penta. Boat was running great all day and just died when I took off at a slow speed. Never had a problem with the boat before. I tried to restart and had no luck. I noticed that I did not smell the fuel that I am accustomed to when trying to continually restart. I did smell a faint electrical smell.
It almost seemed like some one had pulled the safety kill switch.

Here is what I have tried:

I have checked the fuses and breakers.
I pulled both ends off the safety switch and wired them together. (I noticed these were quite warm to the touch)
I tested the wires going to the fuel pump with meter and had no result. (Do I need to be cranking the engine when I do this?)
I pulled the fuel line off the carburetor. No fuel is pumping.
Thought about maybe the relay attached to the fuel pump?

Engine cranks fine just acts like it is out of gas. (It has a full tank)

How can I tell if power is getting to the fuel pump?

Thanks,
Jimmy"

"A volt meter will tell you. R

"A volt meter will tell you. Run one lead to the + of the pump, the other one to ground. If you get power, the volt meter should read 12V."

I had the same problem with my 4.3LVP. With mine its because the fuel pump relay burns up. Have not figured out why yet.

The fuel pump gets +12V fr

The fuel pump gets +12V from either the starter when cranking or the alternator. I had issues with my 99 5.0GL asnd it turned out it was abad pump. Factory manual is pretty cheap (like $15) and has a great wiring diagram in it. I can look up color coded tonight if you want.

"Jimmy, I believe that your fu

"Jimmy, I believe that your fuel pump gets the power from a relay that is activated by a signal coming from the alternator. This means that you must crank the engine before the pump gets any power so that the alternator starts turning. If during the engine cranking there is still no voltage reaching the pump, then you could have a defective circuit breaker (resettable fuse), or a defective relay, or an open diode,or a loose connection. Get the Seloc manual and have a look at the drawings at the end of chapter 7."

"Thanks, It looks like it goin

"Thanks, It looks like it going to be a fuel pump issue. I removed the pump and hot wired it to 12v. Pump wants to start but dies out after about 5 seconds. This was probably the electrical burning smell I was having during the break down on the lake that day. I ordered the part from my local dealer ship for $130.00.

Thanks again for the help."

"That is exactly what my pump

"That is exactly what my pump die, ran on the bench but slowly and you could tell was using lots of current and eventually stalled. New pump and you will be running again."

Thanks for the help. The new f

Thanks for the help. The new fuel pump came in and I installed it. I got a little nervous after I installed and tried to start. It took alot of cranking to get it flowing. The engine finaly fired and is working great.

Thanks again.
