"thinking about buying a 16' jon with 50hp mercury. motor starts, compression is good but will not shift. anyone know what the problem may be? not asking much for the boat and wondering if it would take much to fix it?"

"Did some one pull the lower unit to change the impeller? If so, they got the shifter in wrong--VERY easy to do.

I can help you get it right if that's the case.
